Prevalence and Risk Factors for Workplace Bullying

The prevalence of workplace bullying depends on many factors: how bullying is measured and the definition used, the timeframe, the geographic area, the gender ratio of the employees, and so on. Risk factors are most often found in the psychosocial work environment. How the work is organized, the type of leader and leadership quality, and the social climate of the work groups are all aspects that under the right conditions may turn into risk factors for workplace bullying. Vulnerability factors such as being a minority (e.g., being a woman in a male work group or vice versa, being handicapped, or being of a different ethnicity from the majority) or having depression may also be potential risk factors.
