Abstract:

The earthquake that took place in Haiti on the afternoon of January 12 2010 had devastating consequences with immediate injury and death to thousands of people. This PhD thesis describes and discusses a qualitative research project with two main components: intervention research and case study research. The intervention research aimed to identify relevant interventions to improve the mental health and psychosocial support response to injured Haitians and relatives and to Dominicans helping them in shelters in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The aim of the case study research was to explore pathways to resilience through analysis using a framework grounded in bioecological and cultural historical and activity theories of development: the cross-cultural crisis response framework (CCCRF). The analysis of three family case studies using the CCCRF led to the identification of new practices and activity settings as where opportunities for interventions lie that can promote resilience.
