Phenomenological Psychology – history, theory and research methodology
The purpose of this talk is to outline the phenomenological psychological research
method, its historical development, methodology and scientific challenges.
Phenomenological psychology was initiated by Edmund Husserl and later adopted by
American psychologist Amedeo Giorgi, in order to ground a human scientific
approach to psychology. From such a starting ground, a qualitative psychological
research method based upon a phenomenological theory of science became
possible. The method takes its departure from the lifeworld with the purpose to
clarify the qualitative structures of psychological phenomena using data from
research participants' lived experience in a situation. Some recent developments of
this research method will also be discussed.
